What do nurse practitioners do?

Nurse practitioners provide comprehensive and holistic care. In doing so they are able to:

Provide medical assessments
Provide driver and employment medicals
Diagnose health/ illness conditions
Treat and manage acute and chronic illnesses and conditions
Order and interpret conventional medical screening and diagnostic tests, including x-rays and ultrasounds (testing costs covered by Alberta Health Care)
Perform non-surgical medical procedures including wound care
Perform annual physicals and baby/child wellness examinations
Prescribe medications
Refer to other health care professionals, including specialists and specialized programs and provide patient follow-up
Counsel patients on symptom management, health maintenance, pharmacotherapy, alternative therapies, rehabilitation strategies, and other health programs
